This 100% Estate Grown wine was harvested from our Vista Del Monte Vineyard over a 2 night period – October 22 and 23, 2011 – relatively late in the season. 25 barrels of
wine were produced with 3.75 barrels being used to produce 221 gallons of Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. 70 gallons were used to produce our 2011 Vigna Vicini Reserve (a 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah Reserve) with the remaining gallons used to make this reserve. This Reserve wine is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc. 100% of the Cabernet Sauvignon component and 60% of the Cabernet Franc component was barrel aged in new French Oak barrels. In total, 89% of this wine was aged in new Oak barrels . Barrel aging was for a total of 42 months. After bottling, this wine bottle aged for an additional 18 months before being released to the public.
This medium+ bodied wine offers a gorgeous and inviting bouquet of ripe and jammy red and black fruits, cranberries, and raspberries with hints of cocoa, dried dill, smoke and charred oak (from the new barrels), baking spices and red and green bell peppers. With a nicely balanced integration of medium acidity, alcohol and tannins, these fruit aromas come alive upon taste – ripe and jammy cherries, strawberries, red and black currants, red and black plums, raspberries, blackberries, and fig paste. These tastes are complimented with non-fruit tastes of vanilla and chocolate, sweet smoke, burnt sugar, toasted oak, allspice, red and black peppercorns and anise.
Monte De Oro’s 2011 Syrah Reserve is 100% Syrah. 60% comes from 3 of our best brand-new 2011 French Oak barrels (Quintessence, Rousseau and Alain Fouquet) and the remaining 40% from 2 of our neutral Oak barrels. The wine was barrel-aged for 42 months, producing 295 gallons. 225 gallons were used to produce this Reserve; 70 gallons were used for our limited edition 2011 Vigna Vicini Reserve (a Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend). It bottled aged for 18 months before being released.
This full bodied Syrah has a beautiful deep ruby purple color with high viscosity and slow-moving tears on the glass’s edge. It’s bouquet has developing fruit and non-fruit aromas with pronounced intensity. It is nicely balanced with high acidity, tannins and alcohol providing a pronounced flavor intensity – ripe to jammy developing black and blue fruit –
black bramble, huckleberry, blackcherry, blueberry, black and blue plums with vanilla and cocoa bean, red and black peppercorns, a crème Brulee top, toffee and coffee notes, beef jerky and charred oak.
“Vigna Vicini” or “Vineyard Neighbors” (in Italian), derives its name from Monte De Oro’s first vineyard – Vista Del Monte Vineyard. Planted in Spring 2001, Vista Del Monte consists of 5.2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 9.6 acres of Syrah grape – the only two grapes that grow on this vineyard, thus being neighbors! Our 2011 Vigna Vicini Reserve
was developed from our 2011 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Syrah wines
– the composition is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. 100% of this wine was aged in brand new French Oak barrels for 42 months and bottled in June 2014 producing only 60 cases.
This elegant, vibrant, fruity full bodied wine offers lively aromas and flavors of strawberries, Rainier cherries, red plums, raspberries, blackberries, loganberries and blackcherries. A very tasty, broad-shouldered wine, it is nicely balanced with high tannins, crisp acidity and warm alcohols. It offers a satiny taste of the fruits noted above along with concentrated pomegranate-cassis jam and cherries jubilee, Its taste provides smooth complimentary accents of subtle red and black pepper, cocoa powder, holiday spices, dark roast coffee bean, black licorice and caramel/burnt sugar.
